This course provides and introduction to the literary, socio-political, and intellectual history of East Asia. By reading key philosophical, religious and literary writings in translation, we will investigate those ideas, conceptions of self, society, and the universe proper of the earliest as well as modern times.

No prior knowledge of the languages and cultures of East Asia is required, as the course is intended to provide a base for further study.
