In the UVaCollab course site: History of British Art
HIstory of British Art
Beginning at the Renaissance court of Henry VIII, this survey of British art examines the work of Britain's greatest painters, sculptors, and printmakers up to the early twentieth century. In addition to artistic agency, we will also examine the role that a bourgeois public sphere, industrialization, empire, and religion played on British art's development and reception. There are no prerequisites for the course, but we will strive to link up the major themes of British art with those of British literature, history, and postcolonial critique.
