Tibetan Historiography

By Leonard W. J. van der Kuijp

This essay traces the evolution of Tibetan historiographic writings by analyzing the use of three common names for Tibetan historical works – lo rgyus or “tidings of year(s),” rgyal rabs or “account/story of king(s),” and chos ’byung or “Origin of Buddhism” – as well as investigating a “treasure” history, the Bka’ chems ka khol ma.
