(1.2.1) “Mother” [Perfection of Wisdom Scriptures]

Situ Penchen’s catalog does not specify a name for this initial section of Perfection of Wisdom texts, but these are the major scriptures of their class, each comprising an entire volume or more of the Kangyur. Of the works found here, three are colloquially referred to as “mothers” (ཡུམ་, yum), in reference to their role in guiding beings to the maturity of buddhahood. As Situ’s catalog notes, the scripture in 100,000 lines (D.9) is called “the expansive mother” (ཡུམ་རྒྱས་པ་, yum rgyas pa), the version in 25,000 lines is the “middle-length mother” (ཡུམ་འབྲིང་པོ་, yum ’bring po), while the version in 8,000 lines (D.13) is “the condensed mother” (ཡུམ་བསྡུས་པ་, yum bsdus pa).

Also contained in this section are the Perfection of Wisdom scriptures in 18,000 lines (D.11), and the version in 10,000 lines (D.12).
