(1.3) The Greater Collection of Sūtra Texts Belonging to the Final Turning

By Kurtis Schaeffer (University of Virginia, 2009)

Two unique sūtra collections make up this section of the Degé Kangyur: the sūtra known as the (Buddhas') Vastness (also known as the Flower Ornament, ཕལ་པོ་ཆེ་, phal po che, avataṃsaka, D.45) in four volumes (1548 folios), and the Jewel Heap (དཀོན་མཆོག་བརྩེགས་པ་, dkon mchog brtsegs pa, ratnakūṭa) collection (D.46-D.94), comprised of forty-nine titles in six volumes (1757 folios). Situ's catalog styles both of these collections as teachings the Buddha gave during the “Final Turning of the Wheel” (འཁོར་ལོ་ཐ་མ་, ’khor lo tha ma), thus completing a three-fold division of early, middle, and late scriptures begun with the section on monastic conduct.
