(3.1.1.1) Commentaries on the Intention of [the Perfection of Wisdom]—the Essence of the Great Vehicle, the Middle Teaching, the Mother of the Victors (d.3813 - d.3850; 38 texts)

This is the Tengyur’s section of commentaries on the Perfection of Wisdom (ཤེས་ཕྱིན་, shes phyin, prajñāpāramitā), containing thirty-eight works (D.3813-D.3850) in sixteen volumes. Zhuchen’s catalog arranges these, first, according to their association with four key texts (or groups of texts) related to the Perfection of Wisdom:

  1. The Ornament for Clear Realization (མངོན་རྟོགས་རྒྱན་, mngon rtogs rgyan, abhisamayālaṅkāra, D.3813)
  2. [Nāgārjuna’s Five] “Middle-Way Collection of Reasonings” (དབུ་མ་རིགས་པའི་ཚོགས་, dbu ma rigs pa’i tshogs, D.3851-3855)
  3. The Expansive Commentary on the Noble Prajñāpāramitā [Sūtra] in a Hundred Thousand [Verses] (འཕགས་པ་ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་ཕ་རོལ་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་པ་འབུམ་པ་རྒྱ་ཆེར་འགྲེལ་པ།, shes rab kyi pha rol tu phyin pa 'bum pa rgya cher 'grel pa/, Śatasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-bṛhaṭṭīkā, D.3834)
  4. The Noble Condensed Perfection of Wisdom Sūtra འཕགས་པ་ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་ཕ་རོལ་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་མ་བསྡུས་པའི་ཚིག་ལེའུར་བྱས་པ།, 'phags pa shes rab kyi pha rol tu phyin ma bsdus pa'i tshig le'ur byas pa/, Ārya-prajñāpāramitā-saṃgraha-kārikā, D.3836)

On the whole, the famous Ornament for Clear Realization dominates the overall Perfection of Wisdom section. The Ornament itself begins the section, and the next twenty works are related to it. Some works comment upon the Ornament itself, while some use it as a framework for interpreting the Perfection of Wisdom scriptures.

Following the “four chariots” section, Zhuchen places thirteen more Perfection of Wisdom treatises (D.3838-D.3850) in a “miscellaneous” category that concludes the section.
