Deleting Undeletable Adobe Illustrator Files In Windows XP

Contributor(s): THL Staff

Periodically it happens that an Adobe Illustrator file just cannot be deleted in Windows XP. This problem can be particularly irksome when the files have been moved to the Recycle Bin, and when one tries to empty the bin, an error message appears saying something like: "Cannot delete De6: It is being used by another person or program." However it doesn't seem to be in use by anything. This simple DOS command will possibly solve the problem. It should empty all of the files in the Recyle Bin.

  1. Open a Command prompt. This can be done by clicking Run in the Start menu and entering "cmd"
  2. Type RMDIR C:RECYCLER/S/Q

If that does not work, or perhaps in conjunction with this, it may be beneficial to take the file called "aiicon.dll", which may be found in the directory "C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobeShell" and rename it to "aiicon.dll.old".
