An additional step is to integrate content from audio-video resources into broader reference resources. This involves extracting data from the resources to contribute to the reference resources, as well as linking the transcript to reference resources for accessing further information about a word, concept, or theme that occurs in the audio-video title. This includes such reference resources as dictionary, grammar reference, cultural encyclopedia, and gazetteer.
The extraction of reference data at the simplest level involves extracting usages of words, exemplifications of grammar, and cultural explanations from the title to insert into a dictionary, grammar and encyclopedia respectively. One may simply extract the transcription of the title, or even include the actual audio-video segment directly. Such extraction helps build up reference resources from audio-video recordings. In addition, reference resources can be made to have pedagogical applications drawn directly from within themselves. Thus a dictionary can have multimedia flash card learning and vocabulary exam modules used for thematic vocabulary acquisition. Likewise, a grammar reference can be used generate grammatical drills and learning units directly from specific topics (verb conjugation, etc.).
The linking of transcripts to reference resources allows users to highlight a word and consult reference resources about it. Conversely, one might embed specific reference resource links within annotations of the transcript, so that an audio-video segment concerned with gender issues might point to an essay on gender in Tibet.
