Using the Mail Server

Contributor(s): Andres Montano, Heiser Mazariegos

The mail server for thlib.org using gmail is complete and works. This is the info:

 FieldValue
 Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - requires SSLpop.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 995

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS3 or SSLsmtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587
Port for SSL: 465

 Account Name:admin@thlib.org
 Email Address:admin@thlib.org
 Password:Same as sds-deployer

The plan is to use the mailer to send e-mails FROM this account and when sending to the administrators also TO this account. From within gmail, all e-mail received by admin@thlib.org will be automatically forwarded to thl@collab.itc.virginia.edu . This way, the whole mail server stuff is outsourced and we don't use our own resources to manage it, there is impersonification involved (what appears in the header of the e-mail as the FROM is the actual account where stuff is being sent from) so it shouldn't look suspicious, and if people hit reply, it will make it to thl@collab.itc.virginia.edu anyways. An added plus is that admin@thlib.org looks nicer, shorter and more professional! To make it clear, nobody actually needs to log into admin@thlib.org to check for mail. We are just using it as a "forwarding service".

Steve, David, and Heiser, if you would like to have @thlib.org e-mail accounts (for actual e-mail, or as administrator accounts to do other stuff within google apps through thlib.org) I can create them.
