Converting VCR Records

Contributor(s): THL Staff

First you must download the Narthang bibliographic converter: external link: BiblConverter

The process of converting VCR records is identical to that of the TCR records except for one fine detail: when using the Convert Catalog Records macro on the CatalogProcessing document, specify Your Initials: as "perXXXX", where XXXX is your THL ID number and the Edition sigla: as "N" (if it is Narthang) just as before, but now for the Choose XML form:, select "kt_vol_form". Everything else is the same:

  1. Place the original word docs in the docs folder after removing the blank doc.
  2. Open CatalogProcessing.doc
  3. From the Catalog Conversion menu choose "Convert Catalog Records"
  4. Enter your THL ID as "perXXXX", where XXXX is your THL ID number and then Edition Sigla
  5. The different part is that you choose a different template in the drop down list. Choose: kt_vol_form
  6. Once the XML files have been created, open them, make sure all of the Tibetan converted correctly, and clean up the notes according to the directions detailed below

Notes on Notes

In a typical VCR file, many of these notes occur after conversion to XML. In bold is how to insert them into the document:

Try to use the <note> tag whenever it is possible. There are some areas, however, where the note tag is not allowed. In these cases, use the <s> (sentence) tag and make sure to give the data a value as well (e.g. using a <num> tag). In the case of the <note> tag, use the resp="" function with the THL ID number to specify the author of the note and in the <s> tag use n="" to specify the author. If you don't know the THL ID number, just use initials.

<!-- NOTES

pagination note:
The text ends on 408a.7. There are no blank lines after the text.
I am not sure why this information is relevant. If it is needed, put as an <s> tag with pagination:

<num type="folio">
<num n="begin">1b.1</num>
<num n="end">408a.7</num>
<s n="per3141">The text ends on 408a.7. There are no blank lines after the text.</s>
</num>.

Old VCR Converter Issues - Fixed

Note: Than has cleaned up these issues in the newest version of the VCR converter! (10/18/2007)

There are many places which contain excessive spaces (this may not matter) e.g.:

<sysid> N-v001-bib.xml</sysid>
<date> 2007-02-02</date>
<resp> Cataloguer </resp>
<name> ajm </name>
<date>2007-10-11 </date>
<name>per3141 </name>
<head> Identification Information </head>

There is no <!--wylie--> tag preceding the Tibetan e.g.:

<physfacet type="script" lang="tib">དབུ་ཅན</physfacet>

We've been putting the pagination of the Tibetan category right after the category itself in the VCR records, but this converts strangely e.g.:

'dul ba/ (1b)

converts to:

<doxography n="margin" type="category" lang="tib">འདུལ་བ།་༼[1b]༽</doxography>
