Reference Analysis Of a Blue Annals Chapter from the Tibetan Renaissance Seminar

This involves going through a Blue Annalsand drawing up an exhaustive list of one type of term - either places, people, or organizations - with basic documentation of their attributes in a structured way. In many cases we already have detailed lists, so you may find that all the relevant items are already in the lists. In that case, the work is in adding some data on each item in the provided tables. You then analyze the pattern evident from your work, and offer basic interpretation.

Make a comprehensive list, and then provide a descriptive sentence of each which is a fully written out sentence, not a fragment. Then make a table where you assess each one in terms of a few characteristics which strike you as important. For example with people you might analyze their sectarian affiliation, whether lay/monk, male/female, etc. Then after that is over, examine this for patterns, and formulate an analysis of the data including questions, speculations, and possible tentative conclusions you draw from it. That goes in an analytical section that is located at the top of the assignment. Thus the point of the exercise is how to do quantitative analysis and interpretative reflections.

All of these keep track of Tibetan script, Wylie, phonetic, and English translation versions of the item in question.

Book titles: the main thing is to add a bibliographical reference if the book is now extant. Non-Tibetan students are exempted from this requirement. If you know the import of the book from secondary sources, then put a note on the relevance of the book in the description column. For the resources and description, see Book titles Cited in the Blue Annals.

Place Names: the main thing is to add a feature type to the place. The feature type should be drawn from the THDL Feature Thesaurus, which thus also needs to be modified as relevant. If you know the import of the place from secondary sources, then put a note on the relevance of the place in the description column. For the resources and description, see Place Names Cited in the Blue Annals.

Personal Names: people, deities, etc. the main thing is to add a reference if the personal name is now extant. Specify as possible type of person, ethnicity, sect, and birth/death dates. If you know the import of the person from secondary sources or the context, then put a note on the relevance of the book in the description column. For the resources and description, see Person Names Cited in the Blue Annals.

Organizations: clans, families, sects, other. There are two WIKI pages but they are unfinished. On the principles articulated above, create a WIKI page structure to hold these. See Reference Resources for The Blue Annals for WIKI pages to create.

Terminology: the main thing is to add a definition if the term is now extant, as well as a note as to how it is used in the Blue Annals. For the resources and description, see Terminology Cited in the Blue Annals.
