Travelers from most countries who are going to Tibetan areas in China will need to acquire a Chinese visa prior to entering the country. Most Chinese embassies issue a visa within a few days of submitting an application, or else can issue a visa within one day for a higher processing fee. In the USA, tourist visas are typically granted for 30 days duration of stay and are valid for six months, though sometimes visas with a duration of stay of 90 days will be issued upon request (depending on the consulate or agency you contact).
