Colophonic Phrases

This section contains a series of Tibetan phrases found often in text colophons and their English translation. The translations were provided by Zenkar Rinpoche in collaboration with Steve Weinberger.

བཅོས་​​ཏེ་​​གཏན་​​ལ་​​ཕབ་​​པ། : revised and finalized.

བསྒྱུར་​​ཅིང་​​བྲིས་​​ཏེ་​​གཏན་​​ལ་​​ཕབ་​​པ། : translated; written [final edition]; finalized (usually final copy is written by a scribe rather than the translator)

བསྒྱུར་​​ཅིང་​​གཏན་​​ལ་​​ཕབ་​​པ། : translated; finalized (but one step is missing)

བསྒྱུར་​​ཅིང་​​ཞུས་​​ཏེ་​​གཏན་​​ལ་​​ཕབ་​​པ། : translated; edited (zhus dag; usually by someone else, a zhu chen gyi lo tsa ba); finalized

བསྒྱུར་​​ཏེ་​​ཞུས་​​ཤིང་​​གཏན་​​ལ་​​ཕབ་​​པ། : translated; edited (zhus dag; usually by someone else, a zhu chen gyi lo tsa ba); finalized

ཞུ་​​ཆེན་​​གྱི་​​ལོ་ཙཱ་བ་(a title) : final decision on translation (esp. for a group of translators)

བསྒྱུར་​​ནས་​​གཏན་​​ལ་​​ཕབ་​​པ། : translated and finalized (either editing/ proofreading wasn’t necessary or wasn’t done. Esp. for a famous translator who doesn’t need to have someone else edit/ proofread the translation)

བསྒྱུར་​​ཏེ་​​གཏན་​​ལ་​​ཕབ་​​པ། : same as above.

སྒྲ་​​མི་​​མཐུན་​​པ་​​​​གསུམ་​​ལས་​​​​བསྒྱུར་​​བ། : translated from original texts in three different languages

བདག་​​འདྲ་​​པདྨ་​​འབྱུང་​​གནས་​​ཀྱིས་​​སྒྲ་​​རང་​​བསྒྱུར་​​དུ་​​བཀོད་​​པའོ། : his own translation, without a Tibetan translator.

སྒྲ་​​རང་​​འགྱུར་​​དུ་​​བསྒྱུར་​​བ། or སྒྲ་​​རང་​​འགྱུར། : translated by the pandita without relying on a Tibetan translator

2) direct (literal, including the order) translation style: replicating the structure of the original (e.g., Jeffrey Hopkins’ translation style, as opposed to Thubten Jinpa’s style. Also, used to refer in the main to the phyi ‘gyur translations, whereas the snga ’gyur translations are mainly don ‘gyur)

དབང་​​རྫོགས་​​ཐག་​​བཅད་​​དེ ། བསྒྱུར་​​བ།། : took authority for and then translated (དབང་​​ཆ་​​ཡོངས་​​སུ་​​རྫོགས་པ)

དབང་​​རྟགས་​​སུ་​​གཅིག་​​ནས་​​གཅིག་​​ཏུ་​​བརྒྱུད་​​པ། : lineage passed authorized/ empowered from individual to individual

དཀའ་​​བ་​​སྤྱད་​​ནས་​​བསྒྱུར་​​བ། : translated through sustained effort/ hard work

ལན་​​གྲངས་​​གསུམ་​​དུ་​​བཅོས་​​ཤིང་​​གཏན་​​ལ་​​ཕབ་​​པ། : revised three times and then finalized.

གཏད་​​པ་ : sent to, designated for (?), entrusted (dfg)nogave or entrusted (Padmasambhava explained this in his language to Kawa Peltsek, who wrote down the translation. Then he gave or entrusted this to Khri srong lde btsan. It was not given to the public; it was private and given or entrusted to Khri srong lde btsan)
