Image Processing Steps for Image Database: Prepare the Data for Filemaker

Contributor(s): David Newman and Dan Haig

If you DO HAVE real data/catalog info start here, else, go start down below.

1. Put data into Excel.

Open the tab-delimited or iview text file (exported in Excel) - right click and 'open in excel' the .txt file, presumably exported from iView already. If several files at once, go ahead and collate into one mondo excel file.

2. Check and cleanup data in columns.

Remove useless fields and keep the following, but you must rename them - here is a mapping of the iView fields to that which is in the FMP (and therefor should be the column headers in excel sheet):

iView::FMP
      _________________
      Filename::FileName (remove file extension!)
      callnum_or_znum::OriginalMediaID*
      file size::FileSize
      width::Width
      height::Height
      depth::BitDepth
      general_theme::CollectionTitle**
      scan hardware::DigitizationDevice

      plus add:
      ::Photogapher
      ::Directory (this is the first four digits of the FileName)

* may also be TempWorkflow, or OtherID1, or RollID cum ShotNum in other data sets ** at least, that is how Sihle is done

NOTE: This file will be revisited to add the directory in which the processed jpeg will live.

3. Proceed to Prepare Filemaker for the Data

If you DON'T HAVE any real data (no iView cat, etc).

1. Invent a minimal data set, in Excel, as per above.

This would include (as typed here):

CollectionTitle
Directory
FileName
Photographer
SeriesTitle

2. Now proceed to Prepare Filemaker for the Data ->

NOTE:

  1. Data associated with images (captions, photog'r name, etc) may or may not be needed at this point.

b. For images that are already in FMP, check to see if the data (image size, file format of the original scan) are in there. If so, no problem, no need for iView stuff; if not, then add it in there (need steps here) , being careful not to ovewrite existing fields!

c. For images that are NOT already in FMP.... go to Embedding Images in FMP

d. For archiving: copy text files and iview catalog files to respective dirs on UGLY.

Next: Prepare Filemaker for the Data ->
