Secure FTP Software

Contributor(s): Steve Weinberger

Everyone, whether off campus or on campus, needs to have a secure FTP program in order to navigate to secure servers and do file transfers, such as Blue Unix. ITS provides a free program called Secure FX for Windows users; for Mac OS, use Fugu (do NOT use Transmit because it is not supported by ITS). Go to external link: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/ and search for SecureFX; then follow the download and installation instructions.

Set your default permissions so that other THL users can modify the files and directories you create. Set File Permissions to 664; set Directory Permissions to 775

In Secure FX:

  1. Options > Global options and then click on File Transfer > Options > Advanced
  2. In the File Permissions field, enter 664
  3. In the Directory Permissions field, enter 775
