Maps Status Report

THL is committed to providing (i) dynamic and interactive maps, and (ii) a database of static maps.

(i) THL has temporarily removed access to most of its mapping functions and map database. Our interactive GIS mapping application is currently in the process of being replaced by a far more powerful system based upon OpenGIS compared to our previous use of MapServer. Our new system will use high quality satellite images as backdrop, and allow for two way interaction between the map and Place Dictionary. We plan to bring it on line in an initial release by February 2009.

(ii) We have in the past offered a basic database of contemporary maps of Nepal. These can be seen on the old THDL site at http://www.thdl.org/collections/cultgeo/nepal/maps/.

We are now working on a far more powerful map database using Geonetworks. It will have far more functionality, and will also include many more maps on diverse subjects as generated directly from our own spatial coverages. We plan to first release it by summer 2009.

Provided for unrestricted use by the Tibetan and Himalayan Library
