Legacy Tibetan Font Systems: Fonts, Keyboards, and Applications

The present and future of use of Tibetan scripts in computers lays in Unicode - the world's standard for representing and using the world's scripts in computers. Pre-Unicode fonts are thus called "legacy" fonts, along with the keyboards and applications that made it possible to use them. Legacy systems are still relevant for two reasons. Firstly, many documents and data were created with legacy Tibetan systems, and these need to be converted over to Unicode. Secondly, Unicode is not yet a perfect solution, and so there is still a transitional time where such legacy systems may have specific uses due to limits of Unicode or the limits of hardware a user has available to him/her. For these reasons, we are trying to build documentation of legacy Tibetan systems, in addition to the historical value for understanding the history of Tibetan computing.

Click on the font name in the leftmost column to access information on that fonts, including downloads if available. "Legacy" that these fonts use non-Unicode standards, such that they are no longer of use. We strongly recommend against using them for any purpose other than viewing materials already created in those fonts. For new work, please use Unicode.
