Open Office Macros to Enter Unicode Diacritics

This page links to the macro library that enables the user to insert Unicode diacritics into Open Office documents using simple mnemonic key strokes. It uses the principle of binding certain combinations of key strokes to specific Unicode character. This assumes that one has a Unicode diacritic font with all the required diacritic characters, as outlined in the THL diacritic chart.

Open Office Diacritic Macro/Extension

The THL Open Office Diacritic input macro is a means for entering Unicode diacritics into an Open Office document. They are presently contained in a library of macros that needs to be imported into Open Office in the following way:

1. Download the Zip file here
2. Unzip it to a convenient location
3. In Open office go to Tools --> Macros --> Organize Macros --> Open Office.org Basic
4. In the window that popus up click Organizer
5. Click the Libraries Tab
6. Click Import button
7. Find the unzipped folder, it will contain a "THL" folder, in there choose "script.xlb"
8. Click Open
9. Close Organizer Window and Basic Window

You have now loaded the macros. Next, you will need to assign them to key strokes or actions, by doing the following:

1. Choose Tools --> Customize
2. Click the Keyboard Tab
3. In the Functions Category pane, click the plus next to Open Office.org Macros
4. Click the plus next to "usr"
5. Click the plus next to "THL"
6. Highlight "THLDiacritics"
7. Under the function pane a list of macros will then appear. Highlight "EnableTHLDiacritics"
8. In the Shortcut Keys window, choose the shortcut key you want to assign to it.
9. Click the Modify button
10. Under the function pane, highlight "DisableTHLDiacritics"
11. In the Shortcut Keys window, choose the shortcut key you want to assign to it.
12. Click the Modify button

Shortcut Keys for Diacritic Input

You can now press the short cut key to enable the diacritic macros. The basic shortcut keys are as follows:

• Accent Acute: press and release alt+A, then press the letter
• Accent Grave: press and release alt+G, then press the letter
• Accent Dot Below: press and release alt+., then press the letter
• Accent Dot Above: press and release alt+shift+., then press the letter
• Accent Macron: press and release alt+M, then press the letter
• Accent Tilde: press and release alt+shift+~, then press the letter
• Accent Umlaut: press and release alt+shift+:, then press the letter
