Image Processing Steps for Image Database: Prepare Images

Contributor(s): David Newman and Dan Haig

This might actually be done at various points along the way, but it seems sensible to at least have them ready at this stage so you can move on to embedding them in the FMP.

1. Acquire images in digital form.

There are a few ways, but for now:

DLPS Image Processing

We send to DLPS: raw materials with instructions, hopefully labelled in some way.

DLPS sends back to us: TIFFS and iView catalog, along with the tab'd text file and web gallery created from the iView.

2. Put them into archives and work from those versions afterwards.

For archiving, copy "good" image files from cd/dvd's to Image Storage Drive (1tb boxes).

Images go in their respective folders (named after photographer or collection) on one of the volumes.

To determine which images are "good" for use in the THL Image db:

Open the iView catalogs, click on thumbnail tab, flick light switch ('view options'), then go to the suitcase in View Options and set it to DLPS_noCaption. This provides a view of the image filename as well as the Photographer's workflow name (which is not an anonymous number, but hopefully uses a naming convention with some context as to what/where the picture is).

Delete any image files that don't have a colnum_or_znum UNLESS you really like the images and think they need to stay. If they don't have that info, it is presumed the photographer did not want them included. Also, delete them from the iView catalog list as well as the tab-delimited text file.

3. Create jpg's and gif's.

Process them into one big bucket for jpg's, one big bucket for gif's, then stick them in "appropriate" directory.

P-shop Batch Process to use is here: Belly:Tibet:Image Management:THL.atn

To move them after processing:

Might want to turn off icons before moving a bazillion pix. Be sure file extensions are lower case.

4. Put them where they need to go!

Processed "screen" JPG's ultimately go to 2 places:

1. Belly:Tibet:FMP_Master:JPG_DIR (makes them available to FMP, which uses the big jpeg for all displays inside FMP, large and small)

2. orion/lv2/media1/screen/

Processed "thumbnail" gifs go to:

orion/lv2/media1/thumbnails/
