Week 4 (2/12/2007): Place Essay - Samyé Monastery

Status of assignment: final.

View here: Samyé

Comments: This was a collaboration between Luke Wagner and myself. We collectively wrote the general introduction. We divided the Blue Annals so that each of us looked at references to Samyé in half of the Blue Annals (Luke took the first half, and I the latter half). Then we got together and discussed the references in our respective halves and what we thought was interesting, which lead to the section on Samyé in the Blue Annals.

Week 10 (4/2/2007): Organization Essay - The Imperial Court

Status of assignment: in progress.

View here: The Imperial Court

Comments: I have pulled out the relevant references within the Blue Annals but have only begun the analysis. This is meant to be a look at the way the "imperial court," mainly the emperor and his retinue in both the Yuan and Ming dynasties but also other courts, within the Blue Annals and the Renaissance period. Trying to understand what the "imperial court" means as a symbol of legitimacy within Tibetan society, as a real arbitrator of political power and spiritual significance, and as an agent in itself in the religious and political affairs of Tibet. Do the Blue Annals make clear distinctions between reign periods and even dynasties, or are the "imperial courts" more some kind of vague conglomerate that seeps into the narrative for various ends?
