Inputting Tibetan Texts Technical Documentation

Contributor(s): THL Staff

Inputting Tibetan texts – especially classical literature – should be done following the guidelines detailed in the THL Tibetan Input Manual. The Manual assumes you are using Microsoft Word in its Windows or Macintosh version. We plan to eventually offer an alternative system relying upon a free, cross-platform word processing software system, but do not have a timeline for delivery. We welcome any offers of volunteer assistance to speed up that process. In the meantime, we have the Manual available in three versions – English, Tibetan and Chinese – for use with a copy of the Word Template (“TibetanLanguageTemplate.dot”). These manuals are for input and basic formatting. For more elaborate formatting of Tibetan texts, please see Marking up Tibetan Text in Word with Styles.

Then to use the template, follow the instructions in the Tibetan Text Input Manual in whichever language you or your team best understands:

Note: The English manual contains recent changes that need to be translated for the other versions. See here for the latest changes: Changes to the Tibetan Input Manual in English
